What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Equine-assisted therapy (EAT) is a therapeutic approach that involves interactions between individuals and horses to promote physical, emotional, social, and mental well-being. The session is guided by a trained counsellor and equine specialist. EAT sessions are about the presence, free choice and communication between the horse and the client. Interacting with our therapy horses offers lessons of respect, mindfulness, communication, boundary setting, connections and self-regulation. Our sessions include activities such as grooming, feeding and leading horses to help build trust and emotional awareness. Often simply being in the presence of a horse can have profound effects.  EAT sessions are not held in an office environment and they are not a traditional therapy session. Instead our sessions are held in the outdoors amongst farmland and rolling hills in the presence of a gentle, powerful creature..the Horse. This transformative approach is gaining recognition for its ability to help people of all ages manage mental health conditions. Whether you're a parent looking for alternative therapies for your child or someone navigating your own mental health challenges, horses may hold the key to a new beginning.

Why Horses?

  1. Non-Judgmental Connection: Horses have no preconceived notions. They don’t judge, they simply respond to energy, emotions, and actions. This provides a unique opportunity for individuals to learn how to express their emotions safely.

  2. Building Trust and Responsibility: In many cases, individuals struggling with mental health issues have difficulty trusting others. Horses, however, require trust in return. Through consistent care—feeding, grooming, and working with the animal—individuals can rebuild a sense of trust, not just with the horse, but with themselves and others.

  3. Mindfulness and Presence: Horses are highly attuned to their environment. They live in the present moment, and by interacting with them, individuals can be encouraged to do the same. This mindfulness is often a key factor in reducing anxiety and depression.

  4. Physical and Emotional Healing: Working with horses involves physical activity, which is proven to release endorphins and improve mood. At the same time, emotional barriers are broken down as individuals learn to understand and respond to the horse’s cues.

  5. Supportive Environment: Whether through group therapy or one-on-one sessions, equine-assisted therapy fosters a supportive, encouraging environment where individuals can feel safe to confront their emotions, fears, and past trauma.
